Nurse wins £25,000 jackpot on Middlesbrough Lottery
A “delighted” woman has become the first player to win the jackpot on the Middlesbrough Lottery.
Ms Rajan won the £25,000 prize in the draw held on February 7.
The nurse said she was shocked when she received the email notifying her of her big win.
“I was overwhelmed when I saw the news,” Ms Rajan said.
“I never thought I would be this lucky when I started playing the Middlesbrough Lottery.
“When I started playing, I was happy that I could contribute 60% of the ticket price to good causes in the Middlesbrough community to which I belong.”
The Middlesbrough Lottery was launched in 2022 by Cllr Mieka Smiles with the aim of raising money for good causes.
Tickets cost just £1 for the weekly draws and 60% of every ticket sold goes to supporting the local community.
Ticket buyers can choose which cause to support, with 50p going direct to their chosen cause and 10p supporting cultural events arranged by Middlesbrough Council.
Prizes ranging from £250 to £25,000 are on offer each week in draws conducted by industry specialist Gatherwell.
Ms Rajan added: “I encourage others to take part in Middlesbrough Lottery and support good causes around the town.”
Cllr Philippa Storey, Deputy Mayor and Executive member for Culture, congratulated Ms Rajan on her win.
“What a lovely surprise this was for the first jackpot winner on the Middlesbrough Lottery.
“The prizes are one thing, but the main benefit of the Lottery is the financial support it provides to all sorts of good causes, events and activities across Middlesbrough.”
Cllr Smiles, who launched the lottery when she was deputy mayor, added: “I’m absolutely delighted to hear that we have our first Middlesbrough Lottery jackpot winner. Huge congratulations to Ms Rajan on this fantastic £25,000 win!
“When we launched the lottery, I wanted to create a fun way for residents to support local good causes and be in with a chance of winning something for themselves. This win shows exactly what’s possible.
“I hope this inspires even more people across Middlesbrough to get involved, support organisations in their community and be in with the chance of winning each week.”
